Chaz Williams Named Atlantic 10 Player Of The Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- UMass' Chaz Williams and George Washington's Maurice Creek have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Players of the Week, while VCU's JeQuan Lewis was a tabbed as the league's Rookie of the Week for games played from Dec. 2 - Dec. 8.

A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, Williams averaged a double-double with 22.0 points and 11.5 assists in UMass' wins at Eastern Michigan and No. 9 RPI-ranked BYU - the Minutemen's first games as a ranked team in 15 years He netted 12 points and eight assists in the game at EMU, in UMass' first true road game of the year. Williams came back on Saturday and had a phenomenal game, posting career-highs in points (32) and assists (15), while committing just one turnover. His 32 points are the second-most in the A-10 this season, while his 15 assists tied the school record and are the fourth-most in league history. His assist-to-turnover ratio for the week was 7.7.

He shot 52 percent from the floor, 46 percent from outside and was 14-of-15 from the foul line. Williams is the first Division I player with at least 32 points and 15 assists in a non-OT game in the last 15 seasons. The only other player to reach those totals in a game in that span was Antawn Dobie (LIU) in 2003 in a double-overtime win versus St. Francis (NY).

This is his second award this season and the fourth for a Minutemen player. Cady Lalanne has also picked up two weekly honors form the league.

Creek averaged 21.5 points on 59 percent shooting, highlighted by 25 points and the game-winning jump shot with 0.6 seconds remaining to defeat Maryland, 77-75, in the 19th annual BB&T Classic at the Verizon Center on Sunday. The Oxon Hill, Md., native opened the week with an 18-point, two-assist, two-steal effort in GW's 93-87 victory over Rutgers, converting 7-of-11 shots, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Then on Sunday, Creek took the national spotlight with his 25-point performance and game-winning jumper to help the Colonials top the Terrapins. He made 6-of-11 shots, including 3-of-6 from deep, and 10-of-12 free throws en route to 25 points to lead all players. Creek leads GW with 16.3 points per game and is among the conference's leaders with 24 three-point field goals at a 46.2 percent rate.

 

 

Lewis played a key role in a pair of VCU victories this week. The Dickson, Tenn., native recorded double figures in Ram wins over Eastern Kentucky and Old Dominion. Against EKU, Lewis scored a career-high 13 points, including a pair of three pointers in a late first-half run that help the Rams climb back from an early deficit. Lewis then followed that performance with a eight points and a career-high four rebounds in a key win over in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday.

Richmond's Cedrick Lindsay averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 steals per game as Richmond split two games on the week. Lindsay scored 22 points, 6 assists and 6 steals in leading Richmond to a win at William & Mary ... Dewayne Evans led Saint Louis in scoring and rebounding last week, he is now 18th all-time in the Billiken record book with 1,181 career points ... Rhode Island rookie E.C. Matthews averaged 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists for Rhody during the week ... La Salle's Steve Zack averaged 13.0 ppg. and 10.0 rpg. in a 2-0 week for the Explorers. Zack has recorded four straight double-doubles, the most by an Explorer since 2005 ... Juvonte Reddic of VCU had a game-high 11 rebounds, six of which came in the final 10 minutes and overtime in a win over Eastern Kentucky. In the rivalry game against Old Dominion, Reddic had a season-high 24 points and 12 rebounds.
