Gaffney, Gerardot Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete Of The Week
Dec. 8, 2008
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass basketball seniors Tony Gaffney and Stefanie Gerardot have been named UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week after sensational performances in their respective games last week. Gaffney nearly recorded a triple double in the Minutemen's 85-81 overtime loss to Boston College Saturday night, while Gerardot was named to the Brown Bear Classic All-Tournament Team and scored 54 combined points in UMass' three games, helping the Minutewomen post a 2-1 record.
Gaffney's near triple-double highlighted a sensational effort by the Minutemen in their bid to knock off cross-state rival Boston College for the second consecutive season. He finished the night with 15 points, 18 rebounds, and nine blocks (also three steals and two assists). It included his put back of a missed Chris Lowe free throw to send the game to overtime. Gaffney also had 11 points and eight rebounds in a heartbreaking 57-56 loss to Toledo on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Gerardot led UMass in scoring in each game last week. She had 16 points in a 12 point loss to Providence on Wednesday before putting up 16 more in Saturday's win over Long Island and 22 in a 64-41 thrashing of Brown. The 20-point effort was her third of the season and fourth of career. In the win over the Bears, she made six three-pointers, only one shy of the school record.
The pair will be honored on Wednesday at noon at the Weekly Sports Luncheon. Chancellor Robert Holub will serve as a guest speaker. The luncheons are open to the public and will be held in the Campus Center Room 1009. For the $10 cost, attendees receive a salad-to-dessert meal. Two hour parking passes can be picked up for $2 when you pay for your meal.
