UMass Stings AIC With Big Second Half, 83-56
After leading by just one at halftime, UMass used aggressive defense to outscore American International, 48-22 in the second half, led by a 17-0 run over a 3:57 span midway through the period to give the Minutemen (5-0) a 83-56 victory over the Yellow Jackets (3-2) on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. UMass is now 5-0 for the first time since 1995-96 leading into Saturday's 3 p.m. game against Holy Cross at the Curry Hicks Cage.
Bring The Barcode
Tickets are $10 at the Mullins Center Box Office. The contest is included in the season-ticket package, which customers should have received in the mail this week. When separating your tickets from the season-ticket sheet, remember to include the bar code at the bottom of the game ticket stub. Tickets can be purchased online at UMassAthletics.com or via the Mullins Center Box Office at 866-UMASS-TIX.
UMass returns seven letterwinners - three starters - from last season's 21-12 squad that advanced to the A-10 semifinals and qualified for the NIT, both for the second-consecutive season. Sixth-year head coach Derek Kellogg also has five newcomers - a sophomore transfer and four freshmen - on campus for one of the more highly-anticipated seasons in recent memory.
AIC, an NCAA Division II school located in Springfield, Mass., finished last year with an overall record of 9-17 and 6-16 in the Northeast-10. Yellow Jackets coach Art Luptowski is entering his 15th year at AIC. Senior guards Spencer Braithwaite and Janek Schmidkunz lead a group of seven seniors and 12 returnees.
Kellogg Perfect In Exhibition Play
UMass is 4-0 in exhibition games since Derek Kellogg took the reigns of his alma mater prior to the 2008-09 season. The Minutemen defeated Dowling in 2008-09 and 09-10, before claiming wins over Brandeis in 2010-11 and AIC last season.
