Oct. 23, 2007
BOSTON, Mass. - The UMass basketball team was saluted in a preseason tip-off reception at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. Coach Travis Ford and his upperclassmen were on hand to meet and mingle with fans and supporters of the program.
Captains Etienne Brower, Gary Forbes, Dante Milligan and Matt Pennie along with junior Luke Bonner were introduced to more than 150 fans. The UMass cheerleaders and pep squad were on hand to celebrate the start of the season.
Coach Ford addressed the media and on-lookers at the event speaking about how excited he is for the start of the 2007-08 season. Ford spoke about the Minutemen's new up-tempo style of play and urged fans to get out to the Mullins Center during the season.
He spoke about the connection of UMass with the city of Boston as the flagship state university. He addressed how important it is for UMass to have supporters in Boston.
"This was just an incredible night for UMass basketball," said Ford. "As always David Colella and his staff at the Colonnade did an outstanding job and his is an incredible place to hold the tip-off reception. So many fans showed up and showed their support of UMass basketball. We always ask the people of Boston to come to Amherst, so I think it was great that we took time to come out to Boston and reach out to these fans here. They have come out and been very supportive of everything we have done.
"It was important that we brought out the upperclassmen players along with the cheerleaders and pep squad. It was a special touch. I look forward to seeing so many of these great fans at the Mullins Center."
Following Ford's talk, the "Voice of the Minutemen" Bob Behler read a proclamation from Massachusetts senator John Kerry. It wished the team well for the start of the 2007-08 season.
The Minutemen continue practice as they look to their first preseason exhibition against American International on Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
