UMass Adds WCAP Radio (980 AM) As Sports Network Affiliate
Sept. 12, 2008
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Network has added a fourth affiliate for coverage of Minutemen football and men's basketball. WCAP (980 AM) has re-joined the network and will carry most network broadcasts, beginning with Saturday's football game at James Madison.
The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department has reached an agreement with Merrimack Valley Radio, LLC, that will enable the Minutemen to be heard over the air throughout northeastern Massachusetts, including the greater Boston area, and southern New Hampshire.
"This is a big addition to our network," said UMass Manager of Broadcast Properties Josh Maurer. "WCAP's 5,000-watt signal will allow our fans to hear the games in parts of the region previously not covered by our other affiliates."
"Being in Massachusetts with so many UMass alumns in our listening area, this is a natural fit for WCAP," said Managing Partner Clark Smidt. "We are so excited to welcome UMass into the 980 WCAP family."
Based in Lowell, WCAP has been broadcasting since 1951 and was purchased by Merrimack Valley Radio in August 2007. The station was previously part of the network from the mid-1990s through the 2004 football season.
"We are thrilled to have this relationship with WCAP, and appreciate Clark's efforts, as his passion for UMass sports allowed this deal to happen," Maurer said.
WCAP joins the UMass Sports Network, which also consists of flagship station WRNX (100.9 FM), based in Springfield and covering western Massachusetts, WCRN (830 AM), based in Worcester and covering central and eastern Mass., and WATD (95.9 FM), based in Marshfield and covering the Massachusetts south shore and Boston.
