100 UMass Games To Air On CBS 3 Now, Digital TV
Aug. 23, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department is thrilled to broaden its relationship with CBS 3 Springfield, as the two have reached an agreement where 100 UMass sporting events in the 2010-11 season will air live on CBS 3 Now starting this August. The channel can be seen on Comcast Digital Cable channel 293 in Western Massachusetts and will soon air on both Charter and Time Warner cable systems. CBS 3 Now will show games for all UMass teams ranging from football, basketball and hockey to soccer, field hockey and lacrosse. CBS 3 Now has recently been re-branded and formerly was known as CBS 3 Weather Now.
"This is a ground-breaking agreement," said Jason Yellin, Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations. "We will be bringing games for all of our teams to Western Massachusetts thanks to our partners CBS 3 Springfield. It means a ton for fans and supporters who can watch the games on digital television. It is also important for our coaches and student-athletes as they will get increased coverage and exposure in the state."
CBS 3 Springfield is beginning its third year as the "Official Television Home of UMass Athletics," airing both "UMass Football Weekly" and the "UMass Hoops Insider" coaches television shows. Those programs will continue this season with the debut of "UMass Football Weekly" on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. The show returns to its normal time slot on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m., on Sept. 11.
"Public reaction to the UMass shows on CBS 3 has been terrific these past two years," said CBS 3 Springfield Station Manager John Hesslein. "Broadcasting these live sporting events is just a natural next step in what is a very strong partnership between CBS 3 and UMass. We listened to the fans, and together we found a way to being these games to everyone."
The 100 games are slated to start this Friday with UMass field hockey opening its season against rival Boston College at 2 p.m. Voice of the Minutemen Josh Maurer will call the action with UMass Hall of Famer Pam Hixon on the color commentary. Sunday's field hockey game vs. Indiana is also scheduled for CBS 3 Now, also starting at 2 p.m.
The games broadcast on CBS 3 Now will not conflict with UMass' existing television agreements such as CAA Football with Comcast SportsNet, the Atlantic 10 with CBS College Sports and ESPN, and Hockey East with NESN. The broadcasts will be produced and directed through the UMass Athletic Media Relations Office and will be a simulcast of the CBS College Sports All-Access feed. UMass is using Internet technology to send the feed to CBS 3, and will be employing multiple cameras, graphics and replays for these broadcasts.
The first women's soccer game is set for Sept. 3 vs. Vermont at 4 p.m., while the first men's soccer contest will take place on Sept. 6 vs. Harvard.
The first of three football games to air on CBS 3 Now is the Sept. 11 game vs. Holy Cross at 6 p.m. The other games to air on CBS 3 Now are the Oct. 16 homecoming game vs. Richmond at 3:30 p.m., and the Nov. 13 tilt vs. Delaware at 1 p.m.
UMass hockey will start with the Oct. 22 game vs. Boston University. Men's and women's basketball games will start airing this November.
A complete schedule of games that will air on CBS 3 Now will be available on UMassAthletics.com and on CBS3Springfield.com.
