AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass will be hosting the University of Houston on Jan. 2, 2008 at the Mullins Center. The game completes the Minutemen's non-conference schedule for the 2007-08 season. The Cougars have one of the richest college basketball histories featuring the likes of Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. The game begins a home-and-home as the Minutemen will travel to Texas in 2008-09. "This is a great game to fill out our final opening on the non-conference schedule," said head coach Travis Ford, who is beginning his third year at UMass. "This adds to our already challenging non-conference schedule for the upcoming season featuring the likes of Vanderbilt, Syracuse and Boston College. It will be one of our top home games at the Mullins Center featuring a school with very rich basketball tradition." The Cougars went 18-15 overall last season under former Rhode Island head coach Tom Penders. Houston finished 10-6 in Conference USA reaching the conference championship against Menphis. The Cougars return the top player in Conference USA in Robert McKiver, who averaged 19 points per game as he was named to the All-CUSA team in 2006-07. UMass and Houston have never played in men's basketball.
