UMass To Host LSU In ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon
Aug. 12, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts men's basketball team will play host to LSU as part of the 2013 ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon event, as announced by ESPN Monday.
The Minutemen and Tigers will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. on ESPN2 in the Mullins Center. The game will be the sixth of 14 during the actual marathon, with a total of 18 on the various ESPN family of networks that day, following fellow Atlantic 10 member La Salle hosting Quinnipiac at 9 a.m.
UMass and LSU will be meeting for the first time in men's hoops. The Minutemen are 9-12 all-time against current members of the Southeastern Conference. UMass' recent games against SEC foes include an 83-69 loss to Tennessee in last year's Puerto Rico Tip-Off, a 101-96 double-overtime win at Mississippi State in the 2012 NIT First Round and a 78-48 setback to Vanderbilt during the 2009-10 season - the last visit to the Mullins Center by a league member.
This will mark the second-consecutive year and third overall that UMass has participated in the event. The Minutemen opened the 2012 campaign with a thrilling, come-from-behind 67-64 win over Harvard in the 10 a.m. time slot. Sampson Carter's 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left capped an 8-0 run over the final 1:21. UMass also participated in the initial event in 2008 when they played at Memphis in a game that began at midnight EST as the first contest of 14.
UMass welcomes back seven letter winners and three starters, including All-America candidate Chaz Williams, who led the team in points and assists a year ago (15.5 ppg, 7.3 apg). The Minutemen return 55 percent of their scoring and 73 percent of their rebounding from last season and have recorded at least 20 wins each of the last two campaigns, while qualifying for the NIT both twice. UMass is led by sixth-year head coach Derek Kellogg who has collected 85 career victories and sits fourth on the school's career coaching list behind legends Jack Leaman, John Calipari and Bruiser Flint.
LSU went 19-12 last season in head coach Johnny Jones' first year. The Tigers have four double-figure scoring starters and six lettermen returning, while reeling in a talented recruiting class.
