    AMHERST, Mass. UMass senior Gary Forbes will be playing for a spot on the Panama National Team which will play in the FIBA Americans Basketball Championship. The event starts on August 22 in Las Vegas and is a qualifier for the 2008 Olympics, which take place in China. Forbes was born in Colon, Panama, but came in the United States when he was four years old. He will head to Panama to take part in training for the Championships on August 10.

    The 22-year-old Forbes is UMass' leading returning scorer for 2007-08 as he averaged 13.0 points along with 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Forbes will join former George Washington star Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock who is on the team. Former North Carolina point guard Ed Cota and Wake Forrst forward Jamal Levy are also on the team.

    The Panamian Basketball Federation (FEPABA) began practice August 6 at EPIHO Gym, Punta Pacifica where 18 players were called as they prepare for the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship.

    The 18 players named are going to participate until they make the final cut and travel to Las Vegas, Nevada on August 19.

    A total of 12 players were in the Panamerican Games and the others come from many international leagues.

    Panama start the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship against Uruguay on August 22 and finish the first round on August 26.

    As a part of Group A, Panama will also play Puerto Rico on August 23, Mexico on August 24 and finishing against Argentina on August 25. The event runs through Sept. 2 with the championship and consolation games.

    The 2007 FIBA Americas Championship is a qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games. The best two teams qualify for the tournament while the other three top teams qualify for a World Olympic Tournament in July, 2008 which is the last chance to qualify.

    The 18 players are: Jair Peralta, Ed Cota, Gary Forbes, Michael Hicks, Rubén Douglas, Max Gómez, Dionisio Gómez, Jamaal Levy, Jaime Lloreda, Antonio "Toñito" García, Rubén Garcés, Desmond Smith, Danilo Pinnock, Joel Muñoz, Eduardo Isaac, Joshua Chambers, Reyjavick DeGracia, Amir Alvarado and Joel Isaac Tesis.
