Season Preview

It will be an exciting season for the UMass Minutemen as Derek Kellogg enters his second season at the helm of his alma mater. Kellogg welcomes back high-scoring All-Atlantic selection Ricky Harris and versatile guard Anthony Gurley to go along with a horde of newcomers.

UMass will have seven new players in uniform for the 2009-10 season headed by one of the top recruiting classes in the nation with five-super talented freshmen. UMass has several Top 100 recruits including swingman Terrell Vinson out of Baltimore, Md., who chose UMass over several ACC and Big East schools. Joining Vinson is dynamic scoring guard Freddie Riley out of Ocala, Fla. Also expected to make an immediate impact are gritty, agressive swinman Javorn Farrell from Upper Marlboro, Md., along with forwards Sampson Carter out of Memphis, Tenn.,and Raphiael Putney from Woodbridge, Va.

A pair of transfers who redshirted last season will give UMass front line power after the loss of the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year Tony Gaffney. Sean Carter, who played at Oregon State two years ago, brings similar skills to Gaffney with defensive prowess in the low post and an offensive game around the rim. Hashim Bailey, who was part of two NCAA Tournament teams at the University of Memphis, has two years to play at UMass starting in 2009-10. Bailey will be a power in the paint with his burly 6-10, 275-pound frame.

The returning lineup features two players headed by Harris, who enters his senior year and Gurley, who came on late last season after transferring from Wake Forest. Harris was among the top scorers in the Atlantic 10 all season with 28 games in double-figures including 18 games when he topped UMass in scoring. Gurley showed brilliant flashes in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a season-high 22 points vs. Duquesne.

The starting point guard will be big question mark as UMass graduated its all-time career assist leader in Chris Lowe. Long sophomore David Gibbs will push for time along with junior Gary Correia. Both saw increased playing time late last season with Gibbs starting the final three games. Up front Tyrell Lynch showed his skills against nationally-ranked Kansas in December and Matt Hill returns from his second torn Achilles Heel, which cost him most of 2008-09.
