ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon Release

AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts men's basketball team will open the 2012 season against Harvard as part of the 2012 ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon event, as announced by ESPN Wednesday.

The Minutemen and Crimson will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 10 am in the Mullins Center. The game will be the sixth of 11 on ESPN that day, and the first of three games featuring four Atlantic 10 teams - the most of any conference in the event.

UMass and Harvard will be meeting for the 25th time as the Minutemen hold a 14-10 series lead. UMass won the most recent match-up, 98-63, in Springfield on Dec. 27, 1991.

"Its great exposure for our program to play an in-state team like Harvard who was an NCAA tournament team last year and I feel should be this year," said UMass head coach Derek Kellogg, who is entering his fifth season at his alma mater.

"To be on national television this early in the season piggy backs on the exposure we received during the NIT last year. And anytime we can play that level of game in the Mullins Center is a welcome addition to schedule."

UMass welcomes back four starters, including its top four scorers and nine of its top 10 rebounders from last season's team that went 25-12 and reached the NIT Final Four. Harvard is coming off a 26-5 season that culminated with an NCAA Second Round appearance, the school's first since 1946.

The Minutemen participated in the initial event in 2008 when they played at Memphis in a game that began at midnight EST as the first contest of 14.

ESPN's visit to Amherst will be the first in two seasons, dating back to Jan. 30, 2010 when the Charlotte game was carried on ESPNU. The last ESPN/ESPN2 broadcast from the Mullins Center, which turns 20 this season, was a year earlier for the Minutemen's victory over Temple on Jan. 19, 2009.
