AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass men's basketball head coach Derek Kellogg has announced that Tom Doherty received a promotion following his first season with the program.

Doherty, who joined the basketball operations staff last August, was elevated to Director of Player Personnel/Assistant to the Head Coach.

"Having Tom on staff in his role gives us a person with great credibility, unmatched work ethic and someone who is a valuable asset to myself, the UMass community and our program," Kellogg said. "He fulfilled everything we asked of him and more over the past year."

Last season, as the Assistant Operations Coordinator, Doherty coordinated all of the basketball program's community outreach programs, assisted with class monitoring and helped promote the UMass basketball brand as a whole.

Doherty spent 13 years as a Vice President with Fed Ex, heading up the transportation company's Eastern Region operations from 2003-11. He had previously been in their World Hub Operations in Memphis, Tenn., from 1999-2003.

He graduated from Dowling College in 2000 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political and Liberal Science before adding an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2009.

Doherty served on Dowling's Board of Directors from 2000-11 and was a Petty Officer Third Class in the United States Navy.

Doherty resides in Lynnfield, Mass. with is wife Nancy and their four children, Kelly, Erin, Mike and Tara.
