April 14, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts senior Chaz Williams has been invited to participate in this week's Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. The event runs from Wednesday through Saturday and is held at the Churchland High School Sports Complex in Portsmouth, Va.
Williams averaged 15.6 points and was third nationally with 7.0 assists per game while being named first team all-Atlantic 10 and NABC all-District for the third consecutive year in 2013-14. He finished his college career with 1,978 points and 840 assists, which ranks 23rd in NCAA Division I history.
The Brooklyn, N.Y. native spurned overseas professional offers last summer to return for his senior year where he led UMass back into the national spotlight, as the Minutemen reached the NCAA Tournament and a top 20 ranking for the first time since 1998.
"To be one of the top 64 seniors to be picked for this event is a blessing and an honor," Williams said. "I've been working out twice a day lately in the gym and weight room to get ready for my professional career."
Williams will travel from New York on Tuesday night in time for the event's start on Wednesday.
He has been assigned to team Roger Brown's Restaurant with teammates Aaric Murray of Texas Southern, Shawn Jones of Middle Tennessee State, Tyler Stone of Southeast Missouri State, Fuquan Edwin of Seton Hall, Taylor Braun of North Dakota State, Nick Kellogg of Ohio and Jordair Jett of Saint Louis.
The PIT invites the top seniors from across the country to participate in a four-day, 12 game tournament in front of NBA and international team executives.
