UMass Basketball Champions Center Topping Off Ceremony To Be Held Wednesday, April 16
April 14, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department will hold a Topping Off Ceremony for the Basketball Champions Center on Wednesday, April 16 at 1:30 PM. The event, which is free of charge, will be hosted at the Mullins Center South Plaza and is open to the public.
The Basketball Champions Center Topping Off Ceremony will give all attendees a chance to sign the top-most steel beam before it is put into place on the structure.
The 53,000 square foot facility will serve the men's and women's basketball programs with dedicated practice courts, office space for the coaching staffs, locker rooms and areas for strength and conditioning along with athletic training services. The $22-million facility is slated to come online in Spring 2015 and is funded by the University of Massachusetts Building Authority.
In construction, the topping off ceremony - also referred to as the topping out ceremony - is a builders' rite ceremony held when the last beam is fashioned. The celebration generally also includes the placement of an evergreen tree upon the structure to symbolize growth and bring good luck.
The Champions Center Topping Off Ceremony will follow UMass' weekly sports luncheon, which begins at Noon in the Mullins Center. The sports luncheon is also open to the public and free to attend.
Football head coach Mark Whipple and tennis head coach Judy Dixon will be the guest speakers while parking will be available in the lot directly West of the Mullins Center. A salad-to-dessert buffet can be purchased at a cost of $13.
Wednesday evening the UMass football team will host its annual Spring Game at McGuirk Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
