Gaffney & Lowe Invited To Portsmouth Invitational, An NBA Predraft Camp

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass seniors Tony Gaffney and Chris Lowe have both been invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, the first NBA Predraft Camp. Both players leave on Tuesday for the event which runs from April 8-11 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Both Gaffney and Lowe earned honors from the Atlantic 10 after their senior seasons.
Last year, Gary Forbes was a star at Portsmouth earning an invitation to the next Predraft Camp in Orlando and then a spot with the Washington Wizards NBA Summer League team.
Gaffney had a breakout 2008-09 senior year as he was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player Of The Year. He was also named to the league's Second Team and All-Defensive Team. He ranked third in the NCAA in blocks (3.8) and 17th in rebounds (10.2). Led A-10 in blocks, second in rebounds, second in steals. Gaffney averaged a double-double 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds in 33.9 minutes per game. 3.8 blocks and 2.03 steals per game. He became, the fifth player in NCAA since 1996-97 with 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season (115 and 61). Last: Duke's Shelden Williams in 2005-06. He was named by ESPN's Fran Fraschilla as the 5th-best rebounder in the nation through the first half of the 2008-09 season. He became the sixth player with 100 blocks in a season in UMass history. Stands third in single-season with 115.
Gafney became the first UMass player to averaged 10 rebounds per game since Mark Haymore (10.0) in 1978-79, highest average since Jim Town in 1976-77. He is also the first player since ark Haymore to averaged a double-double since Haymore (17.1 ppg and 10.0 rpg) in 1978-79. His steals total of 61 ranked as fifth-most in a single-season. 307 rebounds ranked as ninth-most in a season in history. He had 12 double-doubles this season after none in his career (first 81 games) entering season. 20 games with 10 or more rebounds. He finished seventh in UMass career blocked shots with 174.
Lowe, laves UMass as the all-time leader in assists with 678. He was named to the Atlantic 10 Honorable Mention Team as a senior. He is a member of UMass' 100 Seasons Of Basketball All-2000s Team with Gary Forbes, Stephane Lasme, Rashaun Freeman and Monty Mack. He spent four years as UMass' starting point guard. Over last four seasons, UMass was 54-31 in his last 85 starts. (64 win pct.) He became the all-time UMass career assist leader (678). Passing Carl Smith (633) at Saint Joseph's (2/22).Passed Edgar Padilla (597) at Xavier (1/31). Lowe is the first player in UMass history with 1,000 points and 600 assists. Lowe is seventh player in A-10 history with 1,000 pts & 600 assists. He finished fifth in career assists in Atlantic 10 history with 678 passing Smith (633) and George Washington's No. 6 Shawnta Rogers (634). Lowe became the 41st player in UMass history to score 1,000 points with a running lay-up vs. Richmond (2/4). Finished 26th with 1,152.
In 30 starts as a senior, he averaged 12.4 points and 6.4 assists per game. Ranks 9TH in NCAA and second in A-10 in assists. With 193 assists this season ranked fifth in single-season assists. Also has the No. 3 mark with 214 last season. With 124 career games played, ranks eighth all-time in UMass history. Eight games this season with 10 or more assists giving him 14 in career, all in last two seasons and ALL in the his LAST 43 games.
