Gaffney Named to CollegeInsider.com Defensive All-American Team

AMHERST, Mass. - After an outstanding senior year for the UMass men's basketball team, forward Tony Gaffney was named to Defensive All-American Team by CollegeInsider.com. The selection process for the 21-player team included Division I coaches and NBA scouts.
In his senior year for the Minutemen, Gaffney was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year as well as to the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team. He ranked 3rd in the NCAA in blocked shots with 3.8 per game and 17th in rebounds with 17.8 per game. After his senior season, Gaffney ranks seventh in UMass career blocked shots with 174.
In the game against #13 Memphis, Gaffney had a career game with 16 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Continuing his success, Gaffney recorded a career high 12 double-doubles in his senior year, after having none in his career entering the season.
Gaffney was one of two A-10 players named to the team. The team includes Antonio Anderson (Memphis), Darren Collison (UCLA), Robert Dozier (Memphis), Gerald Henderson (Duke), Hasheem Thabeet (Connecticut), and Terrence Williams (Louisville).
The senior from Berkley, Mass., averaged 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds this past season. He started every game, playing a team high 1,018 minutes and having the best field goal percentage (.542) for UMass. Gaffney was also the first player since Duke's Sheldon Williams in 2005-06 to post over 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season.
