March 15, 2012
UMass men's basketball point guard Chaz Williams has been named to the NABC All-District 4 First Team as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches this week. Williams leads the Minutemen in scoring at 16.7 points per game and in assists with 6.4 per contest. He has also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and the A-10 All-Tournament Team earlier this year.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is now eligibile to be named to the NABC All-American Team which will be announced on Tuesday, March 20.
A key leader for the Minutemen, Williams helped UMass to one of its most successful seasons in the recent past. At 23-11, the Minutemen advanced to the Atlantic 10 Semifinals after defeating No. 21 Temple in the quarterfinals. Following Tuesday's win at Mississippi State in the NIT First Round, UMass will head to Seton Hall on Saturday.
The 23 wins this year marks the 15th time in program history that UMass has hit the 20+ win plateau and registers as the 8th most wins in a season.
Williams' 568 points this season ranks as the 11th most in program history for a single season. The redshirt sophomore also ranks third all-time in single-season assists (218) and second in steals (79).
For the season, he has led UMass in scoring in 16 games and has 11 20-point games to his credit. He also has five 10+ assist games including a season-high 11 in an overtime loss at Temple during the regular-season.
Williams is the first NABC All-District First-Team selection since Gary Forbes earned the honor in 2007-08.
