Massachusetts To Open A-10 Tourney Against Rhode Island On Thursday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Massachusetts men's basketball team will open play at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 6 seed against No. 11 seed Rhode Island on Thursday night at 9 p.m. Eastern time. The entire tournament will be played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The game may be televised regionally but those agreements have not been finalized at this time. If the game is not televised, it will be streamed on Atlantic10.com. All games will be broadcast on the UMass Sports Network with Josh Maurer and Tim Collins on the call.

UMass (23-7, 10-6 A-10) finished the regular season tied for fifth with Dayton, but lost the tiebreaker based on the Flyer's win over the Minutemen last Sunday in Ohio.
URI (14-17, 5-11) tied for 10th with Duquesne and lost the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Dukes.
UMass swept the season series with its New England rival, winning 73-68 in Kingston on Feb. 9 and 70-67 in Amherst on Feb. 26. This will be the seventh conference tourney meeting with UMass holding a 4-2 edge. The last tournament game came in the 1993 semifinals in Philadelphia.
The winner will face No. 3 seed George Washington (23-7, 11-5) on Friday at 9 p.m. on NBC SN.
