Forbes Named NABC First Team All-District

March 5, 2008

  • NABC Division 1 All-District Teams Release

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - University of Massachusetts senior guard Gary Forbes has been named First Team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, it was announced today. Forbes was joined on the NABC District 1 First Team by Boston College's Tyrese Rice, Rhode Island's Will Daniels, and Connecticut's A.J. Price and Jeff Adrien.

Forbes leads UMass in scoring (20.1), rebounds (7.9), minutes (33.7), and FG's (6.6), and is in the top five of the A-10 in three statistical categories.

The senior from Brooklyn's Benjamin Banneker Academy is the fourth-straight UMass player to be named First Team NABC All-District. Previous first-team selections were Rashaun Freeman (2005-07) and Stephane Lasme (2007).

Forbes, who leads the A-10 Conference in scoring, has scored more than 20 points in 16 of the team's 28 games this year. Forbes has scored 1,505 points in his collegiate career, 996 of which were in a UMass uniform.

The Minutemen are now 19-9, and 8-6 in the Atlantic 10. UMass is currently tied for fourth place in the league, but is just one game out of second in the closely-knit A-10. Massachusetts hosts La Salle for Senior Day on Wednesday, March 5 before returning closing out the regular season on the road at George Washington on Saturday, March 8.

Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, the members of the 15 district teams are now eligible for the State Farm Division I All-America teams to be announced on Saturday, April 5 at the 2008 NABC Convention at the Final Four in San Antonio.

Forbes is one of five Atlantic 10 players to earn first team all-district recognition. Another six A-10 players were named to their respective second teams.
