Esho Named A-10 Men's Basketball Rookie Of The Week
Feb. 20, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - After posting a career-high 18 points and playing a key role in a late rally, UMass men's basketball redshirt freshman Maxie Esho has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week as announced by the league on Monday. Esho scored 10 of his 18 points in the final six minutes of play as the Minutemen overcame a nine-point deficit before falling to the Explorers 72-71.
The native of Upper Marlboro, Md., was 7-for-9 from the field with 6 rebounds and 3 steals in 22 minutes of play. He scored seven points to spark a late UMass run in a stretch of just over three minutes late in the second half as part of a 16-to-6 run that tied the game 66-66 with 2:51 left in the game.
After La Salle went back up by four, a three-point play by Esho kept the Minutemen in the game with 13 seconds to go. It appeared as if the game were going to overtime on a Terrell Vinson three-pointer at the buzzer, but following a review it was deemed a two-pointer resulting in the narrow loss.
The Minutemen will return to action on Tuesday evening as Xavier visits the Mullins Center at 7 PM. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Plus (Comcast Channel 85) and will be joined in progress by Comcast SportsNet New England at 8 PM.
