Nick Mariano, Sampson Carter Share UMass Athlete Of The Week Accolade

AMHERST, Mass. - Men's lacrosse freshman Nick Mariano and men's basketball redshirt-senior Sampson Carter were named the UMass Co-Athletes of the Week on Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the sports luncheon committee. The duo will be honored on Wednesday, Feb. 19 beginning at Noon in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center.
Mariano had four goals to help pace the Minutemen in their 12-11 upset win against No. 14/9 in overtime at the Moe's Southwest Grill Classic, televised live on NBC Sports Network on Sunday, Feb. 16. Mariano earned his final goal of the evening in extra time with 7.9 remaining on the EverBank Field scoreboard to send UMass away from Jacksonville, Fla., victorious for the second time in as many games this season.
Carter provided 20 points, four rebounds and three assists to spur on men's basketball during the 67-61 victory at George Washington that improved the Minutemen to 20-5 overall this year and 7-4 in Atlantic 10 games.
Guest speakers for the luncheon, which is open to the public, will include baseball head coach Mike Stone as well as a member of the men's basketball coaching staff. The salad-to-dessert buffet costs attendees $13 per person while parking is free in the lot located directly West of the Mullins Center.
