Feb. 12, 2008
AMHERST, Mass. - Red-shirted senior Etienne Brower (West Hempstead, N.Y.) was named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week. Despite losing to Temple on Sunday, Brower led the Minutemen with 21 points. Brower single-handedly gave UMass its first lead since midway through the first half with 10 straight UMass points. He hit two 3-pointers, had a jumper and hanging-driving lay-up to give UMass a 48-46 lead with 10:36 left in the first half.
Brower tied the game at 66 and 68 in the first two minutes of overtime on a driving lay-up and jumper to make it 66-66. Brower blocked Temple's Chris Clark as time expired sending the game to overtime deadlocked at 64-64.
Last Thursday, Brower helped led the Minutemen to a 78-76 victory over Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island. Brower posted his fourth-career double-double and second at UMass with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. His rebounding mark was a new career-high as he had reached 10 five previous times.
The Minutemen return home for their next two games, hosting Fordham on Thursday at 9 p.m. in a game that will be shown on ESPN2. On Sunday, UMass will host Saint Louis at 2 p.m., which will be on CSTV.
Brower will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday. The luncheon will begin at Noon and will be held in the Campus Center in room 1009. Speakers will include Hockey Coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, Men's Basketball Coach Travis Ford, Men's Skiing Coach Skip Fox and Football Coach Don Brown.
