Post Game Quotes

AMHERST, Mass. - Rhode Island Head Coach Jim Baron on the game: I thought we dug ourselves a hole in the first half, getting out-rebounded, too many turnovers, and we really didn't shoot the ball well even though we were only down by five points. I thought we made a good comeback but we missed too many lay-ups, free throws, and they stepped up and made the plays. I thought Lowe did a great job of distributing the ball and Forbes was very physical, very aggressive, and again, they are a good team.
Coach Baron on Gary Forbes: He is very athletic, very aggressive, on the wing and he was taking it to the basket very strong. Again, we have been telling our guys that we want them to do that - being physical and being aggressive and he did a good a job, he's a good player.
Chris Lowe on Rhode Island: Rhode Island is known for their physicality and they have great, physical players. We knew it was going to be a tough physical game and we would have to rebound. I think we out-rebounded them and we just kept fighting and fighting and we finally had the lead and we stuck with it. We have been digging ourselves in a ditch for the past couple of games. We had a couple of satisfying wins but this is a big one. This is our "second season" now. We had a brutal beginning of the schedule so this is our first real game of the second season.
Chris Lowe on Etienne Brower: We are so versatile, even our three-man can rebound. Gary averages eight rebounds, Etienne averages eight rebounds, but I think what else we needed was for everyone to step in and get the extra rebounds and Etienne was just an animal on the boards. I'm just so proud he got so many because he's goofy.
Etienne Brower on the game: You know, because when C. Lowe shoots bricks someone has to pick up the rebound. At the beginning of the game I was shooting a little bit and I just couldn't get into a flow so it was tough to make shots I figured I had to do something to help my team. If you're not shooting well on offense then you have to make up for it on defense. I was getting offensive rebounds, and rebounding is sometimes just hustle. I just wanted it more than the other guys. We needed [this win] badly. We have been lackadaisical the last couple of games and getting out to a slow start and I thought it was just really important that we have to start giving ourselves a good reputation in the A-10 instead of letting games slip by.
Travis Ford: I'm very proud of the effort the guys played with tonight. That's the challenge of our basketball team and it's a challenge of any coach when you're dealing with college athletes - to get them to play that hard every night. That has been a challenge for this basketball team more than many I've coached as far as playing with that energy level and that sense of urgency that we played with tonight. I can't say that we played the best game as far as execution-wise, making shots and all, but the energy level, the sense of urgency, the understanding of what they had to do win was at the highest level we've had. If we could put that with a little better offense then we could be a pretty good basketball team but it all starts with this team understanding how hard you have to play every night, understanding the energy level where it's gotta be because again, that's the reason we won tonight. Our guys kind of had the attitude that they wanted to go out and win a game rather than going out and trying not to lose a game and that's how we have even doing it lately. All it was tonight was an attitude and a personality. We were at home and we did was what we're supposed to do at home.
Gary Forbes on the game: We needed this win really bad. We have nine games left and we're trying to do some special things in this program and every game is a championship game for us...I have eight games left in the regular season of my college career so I am trying to play as hard as I can and have fun with it.
