Jan. 20, 2014
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Massachusetts senior Chaz Williams has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week and George Mason freshman Jalen Jenkins was named the league's Rookie of the Week. Both awards were announced Monday for games played Monday, Jan. 13 through Sunday, Jan. 19.
Williams, a Brooklyn native, left his mark in both wins last week, scoring a game-high 26 points with eight assists, and a career-high tying five steals in the thrilling come-from-behind win at George Mason. He scored 15 in the second half and was the catalyst during their final 41 seconds comeback. He scored five of the final seven points and his steal with 10 seconds left led to the game winning basket. Against Elon on Saturday, he had 20 points, all in the second half and was instrumental in numerous plays that kept the UMass lead between 7-12 points the entire second half.
Williams, who won his third Player of the Week award this season, passed Carmelo Travieso for third all-time in school history with 598 assists in just 87 games.
Jenkins, also a Brooklyn native, was just shy of averaging a double-double through Mason's two games this week, posting 11.5 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game. Jenkins, who won his second straight Rookie of the Week award, recorded five blocks, five assists and two steals on the week, while shooting 47.4 percent from the field. Against No. 16/15 UMass, Jenkins finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals and two assists. At Rhode Island, Jenkins scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds. Jenkins finished 3-for-4 from the charity stripe, including hitting a pair at the end of regulation to tie the game and recorded three blocks, including a major stop that forced overtime on URI's final attempt in regulation.
