Lowe Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week

AMHERST, Mass.- UMass junior guard Chris Lowe was named UMass Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5 after two stellar performances against Houston (11-2) and No. 15 Vanderbilt (15-0). Lowe averaged 20 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds in the 1-1 week for the Minutemen.
Against Houston, Lowe helped the Minutemen to comeback from an 11 point deficit at halftime by scoring 18 points including a layup that was featured on SportsCenter as the No. 3 Play of the Day (1/3) as well as the weekending Ultimate Highlight. Lowe also dished out five assists and grabbed six rebounds in the Minutemen win. Lowe performed even better in UMass' loss to No. 15 Vanderbilt in Nashville scoring 22 points, the second most in his career. Over the last two games, Lowe has shot 61.5 percent from the floor (16-of-26) as well as 87.5 percent from the line missing only one free throw.
In the last two games, Lowe has passed UMass Alum and Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino in career assists as he now sits in the No. 9 spot with 334. He is also second in the Atlantic 10 in assists per game (5.3) which is 39th in the NCAA.
This is Lowe's first UMass Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week honor.
Lowe will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon Wednesday, January 9 at Noon. The luncheon will be held on the Eleventh Floor of the Campus Center. Guest speakers will be Head Hockey Coach Don "Toot" Cahoon and Women's Basketball Coach Marnie Dacko.
