UMass Rolls Past Rider, 76-54

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Jeff Viggiano, in the first start of his collegiate career, scored 17 points and added 9 rebounds, boosting Massachusetts to a 76-54 victory over Rider on Monday.
Jackie Rogers also scored 17 points for the Minutemen (3-6). Rider (5-4) trailed 37-30 at halftime after leading by as many at 13 points early in the game.
Jerry Johnson scored a game-high 18 points for Rider, which had won its last three games. Laurence Young added 12 points and six rebounds.
UMass widened its second-half advantage to 55-40 with 10 minutes to play and led by 20 with five minutes remaining.
The Minutemen used a 16-0 run in the first half to take the lead. Viggiano had a pair of three-pointers and a tip-in to get UMass back in the game after it trailed by 13 points, 26-13, earlier in the half.
Viggiano, who hit 7 of 11 from the field for the game, scored 12 of his points before intermission. Johnson scored 11 points for Rider before intermission.
Coach Steve Lappas inserted Viggiano, a freshman from Suffield, Conn., into the starting lineup after UMass lost to Lafayette on Saturday.
The Minutemen outrebounded Rider 40-28, led by Rogers with 10. UMass connected on 8 of 20 three-pointers.
Rider got to the free throw line just five times, hitting three.
