UMass won its second-ever game against a team from the Big South Conference with a 64-60 win over the conference's preseason favorite Birmingham Southern.
Maurice Maxwell scored a team-high 17 points, for his sixth time in double-figures in eight games, dating to last season.
UMass made 10-of-14 free throws down the stretch after starting the game 5-of-13.
Rashaun Freeman netted 12 for his sixth straight game with 10 or more points, dating to 2003-04.
Anthony Anderson is now tied for third on the career three-point attempts list with 592, as he tied Rafer Giles (592) on the list in the game.
UMass canned seven 3-point field goals in the first half as Anthony Anderson made three in the first 20 minutes while Maurice Maxwell had three more treys. Maxwell (12) and Anderson (11) led all scorers in the first half.
