Minutemen Fall To Texas Tech, 90-50
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Andre Emmett scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half to lead Texas Tech to a 90-50 victory over Massachusetts in a Preseason NIT quarterfinal round game Friday night.
Texas Tech will face Utah in a semifinal game Wednesday in New York. Georgia Tech and top-ranked Connecticut will play in the other semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for next Friday.
The Minutemen's only lead came in the first two minutes before the Red Raiders seized control and raced to a 42-24 lead by the break.
Jarrius Jackson and Robert Thomaszek each scored 16 points and Devonne Giles added 11 for Texas Tech.
Rashaun Freeman scored 17 points and Stephane Lasme finished with 13 rebounds for Massachusetts.
Massachusetts was slowed by turnovers. The Minutemen committed 15 of their 28 turnovers in the first half.
With 11:45 left in the second half, Mookie Works blocked a shot and Jackson led the Raiders downcourt. Jackson lobbed a pass to Emmett for the dunk as Texas Tech extended its lead to 31 points.
Texas Tech coach Bob Knight was pleased by his team's defensive performance.
"We got good defense in both halves," Knight said. "When you get away and you score and there gets to be a big margin between two teams, it's pretty easy for a team to get sloppy and give up points.
"And we made mistakes, this is a game of mistakes. And yet, in the end I
think our defense had a continuity to it for the entire 40 minutes."
