Men's Basketball Holds On Against Iona, 67-65

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Shannon Crooks scored 20 points, including four free throws in the final minute, to lead Massachusetts past Iona 67-65 Saturday in the season-opener for both teams.
UMass led by as much as seven early in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Leland Norris capped a 6-0 run to put Iona ahead 26-25. UMass went on top for good after Eric Williams hit two free throws to break a 28-all tie.
UMass led 40-33 at halftime, but had trouble shaking Iona, which cut the lead to 52-51 with 10:35 remaining.
UMass got baskets from Williams, who finished with 14 points, and Jackie Rogers to spark a 9-3 run that put the Minutemen up 61-54. Iona cut it to one point again at 66-65 when Earl Johnson sank three free throws with 4.2 seconds left.
Crooks made a final free throw to give UMass its final margin of victory.
Iona, winner of the Metro Atlantic Conference a year ago, was led by Nakiea Miller, who scored 22. Courtney Fields added nine points and four rebounds.
Jonathan DePina and Crooks each had nine in the first half as UMass shot 59.3 percent from the field before intermission.
UMass hit just 10 of 22 foul shots.
