26-2 Second-Half Run Keys UMass' 90-64 Win Over Cal Poly

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. - The UMass basketball team ended its first game of the season on a 36-10 run to top Cal Poly, 90-64 in the first game of the BTI Tip-Off Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Minutemen broke a 54-54 tie with 10 minutes left in the game and went on a 26-2 run to cruise to the win. Ricky Harris led all players with 23 points. Gary Forbes had his third double-double at UMass with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cal Poly did not have a player score in the double-figures.

The Minutemen led for almost the entire game. Etienne Brower would score a career high 17 points, including nine of UMass' first 12 points to build a 12-6 lead. Brower would hit six of seven shots, including three out of four from three point range. The Minutemen would lead by as many as seven in the first half, at 36-29, but would have to settle for a three point advantage at the break, 41-38.

In the second half, Cal Poly had just one lead at 46-44, when Titus Shelton muscled up for one his four baskets during the game. A Brower layup on the next possession tied the game at 46-46. The Minutemen would build a small lead in the second half, despite not making a basket for more than eight minutes. Both halves, the Minutemen got in to the bonus early and went to the foul line. UMass shot 41 free throws to Cal Poly's 19. The Minutemen made 26, while the Mustangs netted 15.

Clinging to a three point lead at 59-56, Brower hit his third three of the game, upping the advantage to 62-56 and the 26-2 run was in high gear.

For Harris' career high 23, he made five of 13 shots and 11 of 16 from the charity stripe. Chris Lowe added 13, making six of 10 from the field. He had four assists and there steals. He went out of the game with an ankle injury, but came back and had a gutty performance down the stretch.

For the game, UMass outshot Cal Poly, 45% to 36%. The Minutemen made eight of 23 from beyond the arc (35%) and held the Mustangs to three of 22 (14%). CP had the edge on the boards, 46-41.

The Minutemen will play Northern Illinois on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. (ET) and Northern Iowa on Sunday at 6 p.m. (ET). Cal Poly faces UNI on Saturday and Northern Illinois on Sunday.
