UMass Beats Dowling In Exhibition Action, 80-78

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass won its only preseason exhibition game of the season, beating Dowling on Saturday night. The Minutemen trailed by as many as 12 early in the game and rallied back in the second half for the win. Senior Ricky Harris led UMass with 28 points. Junior Anthony Gurley added 13. Sophomore Oregon State transfer Sean Carter grabbed 12 rebounds along with six points.
Dowling's Sean Smith posted a double-double for the Division II Golden Lions with 26 points and 11 rebounds. It was the second year in a row that Dowling gave UMass all it could handle, as the Minutemen beat the Golden Lions, 91-87 last season in preseason.
UMass' freshman five all made their first appearances with the Minutemen. Terrell Vinson (4 points, 2 rebounds), Javorn Farrell (8 points, 5 rebounds), Sampson Carter (6 points, 3 rebounds), Freddie Riley (3 points) and Raphiael Putney (3 points) all played their first game in Maroon & White.
After Dowling's Josh Malone missed two free throws with 45 second left, UMass took the lead for good on two Harris free throws with 22 seconds left, making it 79-77. Dowling had several shots in the final seconds, but missed a free throw and a lay-up and finally a rebound went out of bounds to UMass with 3.9 seconds left. Harris made one more free throw to ice the game with 2.2 seconds left.
UMass took the lead, 76-75, with 1:49 left as Harris made one-of-two free throws. He added another free throw with 1:09 left for a 77-75 edge. Dowling tied the game at 77 on a pair of foul shots by Alioune Adiaye with 1:04 left.
The Minutemen went on a 6-0 spurt to tie the game at 75 with 2:48 on a David Gibbs driving lay-up. The run was keyed by Farrell, who had a steal and a lay-up to get UMass to within one.
Josh Lowe's 3-pointer with 3:57 left put Dowling ahead 75-69.
Dowling took a 63-57 lead on a Sean Smith 3-pointer with 8:28 left in the second half. The Golden Lions went on a 13-2 run as Smith made back-to-back 3-pointers.
The teams played even early in the second half with UMass taking its largest lead to date, 51-47 on Riley's only basket, a 3-pointer with 12:53 left in the second half.
After falling behind by as many as 12, UMass trailed by one at halftime, 36-35 as Harris led the way with 15 points. The Minutemen made 11 of their last 24 shots after starting 0-for-12 from the floor.
The Minutemen took their first lead of the game at 5:39 as Anthony Gurley canned a 3-pointer to make it 27-26 UMass. That capped a 15-5 run over 3:50.
Buried in a 12-point hole, the Minutemen started to hit shots midway through the first half as Harris (two) and Gary Correia made three straight treys to cut the Dowling lead to 21-18 with nine minutes left in the half.
UMass got off to a rough start from the floor as the Minutemen missed their first 12 shots from the floor over eight minutes including 10 3-point field goals. Dowling built a 15-3 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half.
The Minutemen open the regular-season on Friday, Nov. 13 at UCF in Orlando. The home opener is set for Nov. 18 as the Minutemen take on Cornell in the opening round of the Legends Classic in Amherst at 7:30 p.m.
