UMass Closes Out AIC, 89-76, In Exhibition

AMHERST, Mass. - Sampson Carter had 20 points to lead three players in double figures as Massachusetts defeated American International, 89-76, in exhibition play at the Mullins Center Tuesday.
Carter had an impressive stat line, contributing seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 20 minutes.
Maxie Esho came off the bench to post eight points and eight boards.
UMass shot 51 percent in the game but was just 3-for-19 from outside. The Minutemen controlled the paint with a 50-34 rebound advantage and a 42-22 edge in scoring in the paint.
UMass trailed three times with the last coming after a Bobby Harris layup with just under six minutes to play in the first half that put AIC in front 21-19.
Gordon sparked a 7-0 run with a fast-break layup and free throw. Lalanne then threw down a one-handed slam before laying in a Chaz Williams pass.
The lead stretched to 38-26 at the half. The Minutemen shot 45 percent from the floor and missed all nine shots from outside.
In the second half, they made three triples and connected on 56 percent of their attempts.
The lead grew to 20 late in the second half before the Yellow Jackets made four threes in the final few minutes.
All 11 players who dressed saw playing time and ten scored.
UMass will open the season on Sunday against Boston College at the TD Garden in Boston. The 3 p.m. start will be the middle game in the Coaches vs. Cancer Boston Tip Off tripleheader.
