Coach Kellogg's general comments

I am a little bit angry that after preaching defense for the last month, we came out and gave up 87 points. I did not know if our focus was totally on the defensive end of the floor. The strangest thing was that our players think that they did some good things, and I'm not discounting that offensively. We scored baskets and made some plays, but when you get up 13, 15 on a couple of different occasions, that is when you should put teams away and go up by 20 or more. The only way you do that is by locking down on the defensive end of the floor and making some more baskets.

Coach Kellogg on Dowling

I thought that team came and played their heart out. They worked harder than us, which as a coach really makes me mad. When you look at the board in our locker room, it says UMass Basketball, intensity, enthusiasm, passion. No one walks into the Mullins Center and out plays you. Quite honestly that team out worked us and out played us. As a coaching staff we have to do a better job of coaching transition defense, where we sprint back and match up. Then we need to work on our shell defense. Overall, I give their coaching staff credit, but we have some things we can work on.

Tony Gaffney on the game

This is an exhibition game; hopefully we have 37 more games this season. With that, you have to give them a lot of credit and we know we need to step our defense up, giving up 85 points and 32 to one person is unacceptable

Tony Gaffney on the team's reaction to the game

They are upset with the outcome but like us they realize that this is a long season and we're still learning how to play together and learning to trust one another on the defensive end. We took a lot of positives out of that game and we're going to have to get back into the gym tomorrow and get better every single day.

Tony Gaffney on team chemistry

We are going to have to learn to trust each other on the defensive end. We need to be able to get up on our man and know that we have four other guys behind that are ready to help. This is a long season, and we're going to learn and never give up 85 points again. That's not acceptable. The positive is that we got the first game out of the way, we can move forward and go back to practice

Chris Lowe on the outcome of the game There's nothing to be happy about, we let a team come in here and score 85 points in our own place. We have to get back to the gym and buy into the system. If we want to win, we have to buy into what Coach Kellogg is saying and know what it takes. He has been to the National Championship game as a player and as a coach. We just need to buy in. This is unacceptable. Tony, Luke, and I are seniors and we have to provide better leadership. It starts with me because I'm the point guard. I think I am cheating my teammates if I don't go as hard as I can, starting from the tip.

Dowling Head Coach Steve Hayn's general comments

This was a great opportunity for us to get in front of a really good program and test ourselves. We have had some interesting things happen with our program as we have progressed. David Seagers, a junior, is someone we are very proud of. Everyone on this team, in general, has done a really nice job day-by-day in putting the program ahead of themselves. David is a great example of that. We had some young players step up tonight. We are trying to do some new things with this program. We are just appreciative to be here and have the opportunity to be here.

Coach Hayn on what he gets out of this game

This game is encouraging and I think when we went a little smaller, with four perimeter players, I think we got the idea that that is the way we are going to play this year. There has been a big emphasis with our guys to block out and be aggressive and get to the ball. I'm not surprised. We have some tough kids that are determined and hard-working. Certainly, I am proud, more proud than surprised.

David Seagers on whether he was surprised by outcome

I am really happy for this opportunity and I'm not surprised because I think we have a lot of guys that can play on our team. They put their socks on one at a time like everyone else, and they put their shorts on one leg at a time. I'm proud of this team.
