UMass Falls To St. Bonaventure, 66-59
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Kevin Houston scored 26 points and J.R. Bremer added 20 as St. Bonaventure beat Massachusetts' 66-59 Saturday afternoon.
St. Bonaventure (18-10, 9-7 Atlantic 10) clinched the fifth seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament and earned a first-round bye. St. Bonaventure will play UMass (13-14, 11-5) in the quarterfinals Thursday.
After the game, UMass' regular season finale, coach Bruiser Flint addressed speculation that he'd be fired at the end of the year. Flint is 84-71 in five seasons at UMass, but is only 44-46 in his last three seasons. He has a year left on his contract.
"If I'm not back, I'll hold my head high, and if I am, we'll go at it again," Flint said.
Jonathan DePina led UMass with 16 points. Monty Mack added 15.
Houston scored 17 points in the first half as St. Bonaventure, which led by as many as 11, took a 28-26 halftime lead.
Mack's 3-pointer in the first 30 seconds of the second half gave UMass its only lead, 29-28. But Bremer hit three straight 3-point shots during an 11-2 run that gave St. Bonaventure a 50-40 lead.
UMass closed to within four, 55-51, with 2:11 left. But a Houston layup made
it 57-51 with 48 seconds left.
