With the win, UMass is now four games over .500 for the first time since being 4-0 to start the 2001-02 season. The last time UMass was four games over .500 this late in the season came on Feb. 22, 2000, when they moved to 15-11 in the 1999-2000 season after a 57-37 win at Rhode Island. On Saturday at Fordham, UMass looks to go five games over .500 for the first time since finishing the 1997-98 season at 21-11.
The win over Rhode Island gave UMass its 12th win of the season, marking its most wins a season since 2001-02 when they finished the year with a 13-16 record. It was also UMass' sixth win in the A-10, its most since being 6-10 in 2002-03.
The win - on the road - marked the Minutemen's third road win a in a row, signifying UMass' longest road win streak since three straight road wins from Jan. 25-30, 2001. In that streak, UMass won at LaSalle, Temple and Rhode Island in three consecutive games away from home. UMass also now has three road wins in the A-10 for the first time since going 5-3 on the road in 2000-01.
UMass held Rhode Island to just 14 points in the first half, its best defensive effort since holding Richmond to 14 points in the first half on Feb. 12, 2003. The Rams missed their final seven shots of the first half on their way to shooting just 23 percent in the first half (7-of-30).
Maurice Maxwell reached double-figures for the eighth time in nine games and for the seventh game in a row with 14. He is averaging 14.9 over the last seven games.along with 4.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds in his strong run.
Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 14th time in 20 games this season and 38th in 49 career games with 10.
Senior Anthony Anderson added to his career marks on UMass' all-time lists, he is still 20th in career scoring (1,201); second in career three-pointers made (275), second in career three-pointers attempted (697), third in career steals (150) and is seventh in career assists (365)..
