AMEHRST, Mass. (AP) - Micah Brand scored 17 points and Kitwana Rhymer added 14 as Massachusetts beat George Washington 73-60 on Wednesday night.

Trailing 49-35 midway through the second half, the Colonials went on a 10-1 run to pull within five, 50-45, with seven minutes to play. But UMass (8-8, 2-3 Atlantic 10) countered with a Brand basket underneath and a pair of Rhymer free throws, and the Colonials never threatened again.

Brand also added a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

It was the third consecutive loss for George Washington (10-8, 3-4). Chris Monroe led all scorers with 24 points and Jaason Smith added 12 for the Colonials.

Shannon Crooks, who had four 3-pointers, also had 14 for the Minutemen. Raheim Lamb added 10.

George Washington used an 8-0 run to go up 12-5 early in the first half. UMass then countered with an 8-0 run of its own, with Lamb hitting the last two baskets as the Minutemen regained the lead 13-12.

With GW back in front, 20-16, Crooks hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and Kyle Wilson followed with his own 3-pointer, as UMass moved ahead by five points at halftime.
