CHARLOTTE - Hot 3-point shooting from Freddie Riley in the first half and strong rebounding helped UMass pull away from Charlotte, 73-54 at the Halton Arena on Wednesday night. The Minutemen are 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 2006-07. The 49ers saw their six-game home winning streak end and stand at 8-10 overall, 1-3 in the league.

Riley (15 in the first half) finished with 18. Senior Anthony Gurley tallied 17 and Javorn Farrell netted 11 points, all in the second half to lead UMass' charge. Most notably, the Minutemen dominated the glass, outrebounding the 49ers 40-32 led by Terrell Vinson (seven) and Sean Carter (six).

Riley put the final dagger in the 49ers with a 3-poiny bomb with 5:30 left in the second half to give UMass a 59-45 lead.

The Minutemen fended off the spunky 49ers and extended the lead to 11 at 52-41 on a 3-pointer by Gurley with the shot clock expiring and a drive to the hole by Javorn Farrell with 8:51 left in the second half.

UMass took a 10-point lead at, 39-29 on a 3-pointer by Vinson with 18:00 left in the second half, but Charlotte rallied for seven straight points to cut the deficit to three at 39-36 on a Wilderness lay-up with 16:24 left.

The first half saw the revival of Riley, who scored 15 points including 3-of-5 on 3-point field goals to give the Minutemen a 35-27 lead at intermission. Sean Carter was also strong with eight points, all in the paint.



After a hot shooting start to the game by both teams, which saw the game tied at 20 with 12 minutes left in the first half, the teams went stone-cold. Charlotte went nearly nine minutes with a field goal while UMass was held scoreless for more than four minutes.

UMass and Charlotte combined to make 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the first eight minutes before the well ran dry for both teams.

The Minutemen return home to host Richmond on Saturday at 12 pm. The game will air on the CBS College Sports regional networks including Comcast SportsNet New England.
