Lalanne Leads UMass Past Elon, 84-74

UMass (16-1) won its sixth-consecutive game and defeated the Phoenix for the third-straight season.
Lalanne finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks for his eighth double-double of the year. Maxie Esho was very efficient off the bench as he finished with 17 points - one shy of his career-high - making 7-of-10 from the floor while adding seven rebounds.
Williams also had four assists and passed Edgar Padilla for third all-time in school history. He now has 598 assists in 87 games as a Minuteman.
UMass shot 47 percent from the floor and was 26-of-35 from the free throw line.
The Minutemen outscored the Phoenix 38-18 in the paint and converted 14 offensive rebounds into a 15-10 edge in second chance points. UMass had a 45-32 edge on the glass.
UMass scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back, leading by as many as 14 midway through the first half. They led 41-30 at the break.
Elon got to within nine five times in the first 10 minutes of the second half and seven four times later on, but UMass had an answer for every challenge. The Phoenix opened the period making just 3-of-15.
Elon (10-9) lost for just the second time in nine home games and was hosting a ranked opponent for the first time in school history. Lucas Troutman had 19 points to lead the Phoenix. They were 9-of-24 from outside.
UMass will return to Atlantic 10 play on Wednesday when it travels to Richmond. Tipoff at Robins Center is set for 7 p.m.
