RICHMOND, Va.- Tony Dobbins scored nine of his 17 second-half points in succession at the beginning of an 11-3 run midway through the second half Wednesday night and Richmond beat Massachusetts 63-54.

The Spiders (8-8, 2-1 Atlantic 10) hit nine 3-pointers before Dobbins got hot with just over 10 minutes to play. Richmond also wore down the Minutemen on defense, frustrating the visitors with a 1-3-1 zone.

Massachusetts (6-8, 0-3) lost its fifth straight after a solid start to the season that included victories against Oregon and North Carolina State.

Richmond, meantime, lived on 3-pointers for the first 29{ minutes, but led only 37-34 until Dobbbins scored on a fast break off a turnover, was fouled and converted the three-point play. He added another breakaway 33 seconds later, two free throws with 9:44 left and a layup with 9:00 left.

That gave the Spiders a 46-37 lead, and with the Minutemen continuing to be frustrated by Richmond's ball-swatting interior defense, the home team maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way. Massachusetts shot just 38 percent, turned the ball over 14 times and never got going.

Dobbins finished with 19 points to lead the Spiders, Reggie Brown had 14 and Mike Skrocki 11. Richmond was 9-for-20 on 3-point shots.

Anthony Anderson led Massachusetts with 15 points.

Neither team led by more than four in the first half, but the Spiders got 3-pointers from five different players and led 23-21 at the break.

If not for the 3-point shooting, the Spiders could have been in trouble, they made 5 of 12 shots from behind the arc, 3 of 12 inside it.
