Jan 9, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Boban Savovic keyed an 11-2 run with back-to-back 3-pointers and Ohio State staved off a late University of Massachusetts surge to gain a 70-62 win Wednesday in the final non-conference game for both teams.
UMass cut an 18-point deficit to five with 58 seconds to play before Ohio State saved the win from the foul line.
Savovic scored a team-high 19 points as the Buckeyes, winners of their first two Big Ten games, lifted their overall record to 11-2.
UMass, loser of six of their last eight, fell to 6-6 overall. The Minutemen are 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
But Ohio State got its last five points from the foul line to seal the win.
The Buckeyes put four players in double figures. Behind Savovic were Brian Brown with 17, Brent Darby with 13 and Zach Williams with 10.
Brand added 15 points and 9 rebounds for UMass.
Ohio State scored the last nine points of the first half, starting with a 3-pointer by Brown and ending with a three-point play by Savovic.
UMass shot 27.6 (8-for-29) from the field in the first half. Its last lead was at 10-9 on a dunk by Kitwana Rhymer.
The teams were tied at 15 before Brown hit a basket and Savovic made a pair
from the line to put the Buckeyes on top for good.
