UMass beat Xavier for the first time in five tries - since a 59-49 win on Feb. 14, 2001 at the Mullins Center. Overall, Xavier leads the series, 8-7.
UMass is 5-0 this season in games decided by four points or less.
UMass is 7-1 this season when they score 60 or more points.
UMass played its first overtime game of the season and first at the Mullins Center since Feb. 20, 1999 - a UMass 78-77 win over Xavier in double overtime. It was just the third double-OT game at the Mullins Center with the other coming on Feb. 18, 1998, an 87-85 loss to Rhode Island.
The last triple overtime game for UMass came on Feb. 11, 1990, an 83-82 loss to Temple at the Cage. All-time,UMass played its eighth triple-overtime game. This also the first triple-OT game at the Mullins Center.
UMass shot over 50 percent in a game for the first time all season and first time since March 6, 2004, when they shot 53.5 percent at Richmond.
Freshman Jeff Salovski played a career-high in minutes and scored his career-high with 21 points, his first in double-figures. He went 9-for-10 from the floor.
Senior Anthony Anderson added to his career point total as he now has 1,102, which stands 27th all-time. Next on the list is Mike Williams, who had 1,122 from 1992-95. Anderson added to his career totals in three-pointers (252), which is second all-time to Monty Mack, who made 331. Anderson is also third in all-time three-pointers attempted with 649. He is also eighth in career assists with 339. He also has 133 career steals, just short of the top-10 list where Anton Brown and Tony Barbee are tied with 135.
Anderson had 11 of his 14 points in the first half. It was his 56th career game with double-figures and sixth this season.
Maurice Maxwell reached double-figures for the fifth time this season with 16. It was his 16th career game with 10-plus points. Maxwell also had a season-high 10 assists - the most by a UMass player this season. Maxwell also had nine rebounds, a new career-high. Maxwell was one rebound short of a triple-double.
Maxwell's 10 assists, the most by a UMass player since Michael Lasme had 10 on Jan. 9, 2003.
Rashaun Freeman also had double-figures with 12 points, his 33rd time in 41 career games with 10-plus points. Freeman was the first player to foul out - amazingly in the third overtime.
Stephane Lasme also reached double-figures for the first time this season with 11 and just third of his career.
Art Bowers came off the bench for the first time this season. It was the first time he did not start since Jan. 10, 2004 vs. George Washington. He had started 27 games in a row.
UMass finished its longest homestand (six games) in more than 70 years with this Xavier game, as the school hosted seven home games in a row in 1930-31 at Drill Hall.
UMass heads on the road for the first time in a month as the Minutemen head to Saint Joseph's for a Jan. 12 game. That game will be Steve Lappas' 100th game as a head coach at UMass.
