NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Central Connecticut raced out to 33-9 in the first nine minutes and never looked back as the Blue Devils beat the Minutemen (8-5 overall) 92-63 at Detrick Gym on Monday night. CCSU (8-5) scored 17 consecutive points to put UMass in an early hole that the Minutemen were never able to dig out of. Senior Anthony Gurley led UMass with 18 points and now has 1,235 in his career and 1,036 at UMass. Freshman Raphiael Putney tallied a career-high 14 points.

Three Blue Devils scored 20 or more points led by Robby Ptacek (a career-high tying 26 points), Shemik Thompson (24 points) and Ken Horton (24 points). CCSU shot over 56 percent from the floor for the game and a stellar 55.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. They also shot a near peerless 80 percent from the foul line (20-of-25).

CCSU built a lead to 31 points on a Ptacek 3-pointer with 4:18 left in the second half.

The Blue Devils used a 17-0 run to expand a 16-9 lead to the 33-9 advantage midway through the first half. CCSU took an early 12-4 lead three minutes into the game on a jumper by Ptacek.

UMass cut the deficit to as small as 13 late in the first half with a 22-11 with 2:28 left as Gurley canned a 3-pointer to give him double-figures for the 13th time in as many games this season.

CCSU had a 49-31 halftime advantage as the Blue Devils shot 58 percent from the floor including 8-of-13 from 3-point range (61.5 percent). Ptacek (13), Thompson (13) and Horton (11) all scored in double-figures for the home team in the first 20 minutes. Gurley led UMass with 12 points.

UMass returns home to open the Atlantic 10 schedule against Dayton on Sunday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on CBS College Sports.
