Elected to take a redshirt year in 2001-2002 so that he would graduate in the same year his athletic eligibility ends, fifth-year senior Jackie Rogers will challenge for a starting spot along the Minuteman frontline in his final year in Amherst ... One of two seniors on coach Steve Lappas’ second UMass squad, Rogers and fellow senior Micah Brand will serve as co-captains during the 2002-2003 campaign ... Named to both the UMass Athletic Council and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during the 2002 spring semester ... Has played for four coaches in five-year collegiate career, and six in last seven years dating to senior year of high school ... “He brings a toughness that we need,” Lappas said. “He’s relentless, he plays hard, he plays tough, and he’s not afraid of anybody or anything. I believe it (the redshirt year) was great for him because he was able to learn our style without having to worry about playing in the games. Jackie improved just by practicing and from our individual instruction. I believe he is a much improved player from what I’ve seen.”
