After appearing in 16 games as a reserve during his rookie season, guard Jameel Pugh hopes to break into the backcourt rotation as a sophomore...averaged 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds on UMass’ four-game Greek tour...his only double-figure scoring game of the trip, a 13-point outing, came in UMass’ only tour victory, a 73-63 win over Team Hellas...nicknamed Superman because of his dunking abilities (his vertical jump is estimated at between 40 and 43 inches), he was tabbed as the World’s Best Dunker by Slam Magazine, and in a recent poll was rated as the 33rd-best dunker of all-time by the same publication...“Jameel is very athletic,” said Minuteman coach Steve Lappas. “He didn’t get a chance to play much last year, so I believe he is really hungry this season, so hopefully that will drive him.”

Averaged 1.2 points and 0.8 rebounds in 2.8 minutes of work per game as a reserve…10 of his 20 points and nine of his 13 rebounds came in UMass’ losses to nationally-ranked foes Connecticut (a career-high seven points and four rebounds in his Maroon and White debut) and North Carolina (three points and a career-best five boards)...sparked UMass’ victory over George Washington in the A-10 opener by scoring three points and collecting an assist in four minutes of action...also tallied five points in UMass’ homecourt win over Fordham...shared the team’s Coaches Appreciation Award with teammate Winston Smith.
Rated as the West Coast’s No. 2 shooting guard and as the nation’s 71st-best prep as a senior by Bob Gibbons All-Star Report…averaged 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks in senior campaign for coach Archie Jones at Sacramento’s Grant Union (Calif.) High School…because his high school team had just one other player over 6-4 on its roster, Pugh played in the post for much of his senior season…led team to 29-3 record as a senior…helped team to state Division II runner-up finish and Northern California championship as a junior…averaged 17 points and eight rebounds during junior year…Grant Union went 63-6 during his final two varsity seasons…team captain and MVP during senior year…McDonald’s All-America nominee…all-league performer as a senior…played for L.A.
