Forward Willie Jenkins looks to see more time on the wing as a sophomore after making 18 appearances off the bench as a freshman...wore No. 4 as a rookie, but has switched to No. 1 for the upcoming season...contributed 1.3 points and 0.8 rebounds per game on UMass’ four-game Greek tour...“Willie’s another guy who didn’t get a chance last year, but he’s hungry and worked very hard in the preseason,” first-year coach Steve Lappas said.
As a Freshman in 2000-2001
Saw action in 18 games off the bench...averaged 0.8 points and 0.4 rebounds in 4.2 minutes of work per game...tallied career-high six points in a career-long 16-minute stint off the pine at Holy Cross...14 of his 22 field goal attempts were from beyond three-point range, while three of his five made field goals were from bonus distance...tallied three points in games against Boston U., and North Carolina...saw action in each of UMass’ first 10 games of the season, but appeared in just eight of its last 20 games...received team’s Academic Award at the season-ending banquet.
Played for coach Sylvester Ford at Memphis’ (Tenn.) Fairley High School…averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in final season of high school basketball, en route to team MVP honors…led team to 17-11 record as senior…earned All-Metro, All-District, All-Region and honorable mention All-State honors…captained high school team as junior and senior…participated in Nike All-Star Classic Camp...signed with UMass in the spring of 2000 after considering Utah, Auburn and Alabama.
