Tom Doherty is in his sixth year as Assistant to the Head Coach and his third as Director of Operations after a promotion in the Summer, 2014.
"Tom has been an outstanding leader representing the UMass men's basketball program these past five years and he has helped me build a program that is poised to compete at the highest levels of men's college basketball," head coach Derek Kellogg said. "His support of me and his dedication to UMass is second-to-none. The program has earned great success over the previous five years, compiling an 101-66 win-loss record with participation in two NITs (2012 & 2013) and an NCAA appearance in 2014. In 2015, we had our first player, Cady Lalanne, drafted into the NBA with the 55th pick overall by the San Antonio Spurs. All of these accomplishments are a direct result of my staff's hard work and Tom has played a key role in all of our successes."
Over the past five seasons Doherty coordinated all of the basketball program's community outreach opportunities, the Big E, JDRF - the walk for Juvenile Diabetes, the Executive Committee of Coaches vs. Cancer and team visits to Springfield-area hospitals, including Shiners Hospitals for Children and the Baystate Medical Center. He continues to work with all departments to drive excellence throughout the UMass organization, supporting academics, compliance and communications.

He was a five-time Five-Star Award winner of FedEx's most prestigious leadership award and a three-time President's Club recipient for outstanding sales support.
He attended Northeastern University and received a degree certificate in Transportation and Physical Distribution Management in 1992. He graduated from Dowling College in 2000 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Liberal Studies before adding an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2009. He was lauded by Dowling in 2010 for being one of Dowling's most Distinguished Alumni in the college's 40 years of existence.
Doherty served on Dowling's Board of Directors from 2000-2011, including three years as Vice Chairman from 2006-2009. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and received an Honorable Discharge for his service to the United States of America.
