A native of Pittsfield, Mass., Paul Culpo is in his second season on coach Steve Lappas? staff, and his first as the program?s Director of Basketball Operations. He spent the 2001-2002 season as Lappas? administrative assistant, and was promoted into his current position last April when Brian Loyd took a full-time assistant?s position at Oregon State.

Culpo is responsible for coordinating team travel, orgranizing team purchases and allotments, scheduling opponents and practice times, and budgeting expenditures. He is also heavily involved with the UMass summer camp program and in coordinating efforts with several of the program?s sponsors.

Culpo, who has nine years of coaching experience on his resume, spent the 2000-2001 season as head coach and director of operations for England?s Doncaster Panthers of the National Basketball League. He took a team, picked to finish last by the media and coaches, to the playoffs in his only season there.

Before that move, Culpo served as an assistant basketball coach at St. Michael?s (Vt.) College (1997-2000), Union (N.Y.) College (1996-1997), Genesee (N.Y.) Community College (1995-1996) and UMass-Boston (1993-1995).

A 1995 graduate of St. Michael?s (Vt.) College, Culpo received his master?s degree from UMass-Boston in 1996. He and his wife, Katy, reside in Amherst with their children, Jac (3) and Theresa (1).
