2011 Baseball Captains Announced
Oct. 13, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball seniors Eric Fredette and Kyle Multner have been selected as captains for the 2011 season, head coach Mike Stone announced on Wednesday. The duo will lead the Minutemen this coming spring as the squad looks to make its second Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance in three seasons.
"The team, as well as the coaches, feel that the choice of captains will lend a strong representation of everyone on the ballclub," said coach Stone. "The two captains will supply leadership in different ways and forms, but with the overall goal of strengthening the team as a whole as the primary objective. We look forward to having Eric and Kyle providing a positive direction in terms of player ownership as we move forward from the fall program and into the spring season."
Fredette, who was a recipient of the team's 2010 E. Joseph Thompson Most Valuable Player Award and an Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team selection, led the Minutemen with a .384 average in 2010. In his first season at UMass after transferring from Vermont, the second baseman played and started 45 of the squad's 46 games and totaled 32 runs scored, 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 31 RBI. His team-best 19 walks helped him boast a .443 on-base percentage, while he led the squad with 10 sacrifices, as well. Fredette registered a team-high 22 multi-hit games on the year and hit safely in 40 of the 45 contests he appeared in, reaching base in all but one. His 2010 hits total (71) currently ranks ninth all-time in the UMass record book.
Multner enters his senior campaign as the active leader in career hits (119) and home runs (20). He appeared in 30 games in 2010, starting 28 and batted .262 (27-for-103) with 19 runs scored and 18 RBI. The outfielder tied for the team lead in home runs with eight and also had four doubles. He registered six multi-hit games and had multiple RBI in five contests.
UMass will open its 2011 season on Friday, March 4, at the Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.
