Baseball Announces 2013 Team Award Winners
Oct. 1, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball head coach Mike Stone recently announced the team's 2013 award winners at the program's annual golf outing. Senior captain Ron Wallace was named the recipient of The Dennis DellaPiana Memorial Award and assistant captain Rich Graef earned the Coaches Award for most improved.
Wallace won The Dennis DellaPiana Memorial Award for exemplifying courage, determination, and sportsmanship. First instituted in May of 1966, the award honors the memory of Dennis DellaPiana, who was truly a great student-athlete at the University of Massachusetts in the mid 1960's, but died in April of 1966 during his senior year after a long battle with Hodgkin's disease. His courage, determination and sportsmanship were outstanding. DellaPiana's nephew, Dennis Cataldo, and sister, Diana Cataldo, presented Wallace with the honor.
Wallace served as a key reliever in the Minutemen bullpen in 2013 as a senior. The right-hander went 2-1 with one save in 23.1 innings pitched over 12 appearances. A four-year letterwinner for the Minutemen, Wallace allowed the fewest amount of walks on the team with 11 and struck out 20 batters in his final collegiate campaign.
Graef led UMass with 30 runs scored and was one of two players to start all 45 games for the Minutemen. The senior recorded a batting average of .261 with 15 RBI and went 13-for-18 on stolen base attempts. He also notched 12 multi-hit games, four multi-RBI games and ended his collegiate career on a five-game hitting streak.
