May 26, 2009
DAYTON, Ohio - Junior two-way player Mike Gedman represented the UMass baseball squad on the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team, the conference office announced on Saturday. The Minutemen, who made their first A-10 Tournament appearance since 2003, went 2-2 as the No. 4 seed in the six-team field, posting victories over Fordham and Charlotte before falling to eventual champion Xavier, 6-3, in their final game.
Gedman hit a team-best .375 (6-for-16) in UMass' four contests with five runs scored, one double, two home runs and two RBI. He went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Minutemen to a thrilling comeback over Charlotte in an elimination game on Thursday night. Gedman belted a home run to tie the score at four in the eighth, helping UMass overcome a 4-1 deficit against the two-time defending A-10 champion 49ers and force extra innings. The junior first baseman then legged out an infield single and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th when his younger brother, Matt, dropped a two run hit into shallow right field.
Joining Gedman on the All-Tournament squad were Xaviers' Billy O'Conner, Bobby Freking, John McCambridge, Zac Richard and Ben Thomas; Rob Lyerly of Charlotte; Zack Jacob of Dayton and Rhode Island's Nick Greenwood, Oliver Palmer and Tom Coulombe.
Gedman finished the season as the team leader in batting average (.345, 41-for-119) and earned run average (2.42) as he threw 22.1 innings out of the bullpen and logged a squad-best five saves.
UMass enjoyed a remarkable run in 2009 as the squad rallied from a 1-7 start to conference play to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 with a record of 16-11, the most league victories for the team since 1997. Overall, the Minutemen posted a record of 27-26, their highest wins total since 2001.
